This ancient knowledge is shared by Minmia (Aboriginal senior woman, educator and healer) as she explains this in her book ‘Under the Quandong Tree’:

“As you know, when a baby is born the placenta is still attached to the child but it carries the Miwi print of that life’s journey. The moment that baby sucks its first breath of air, a switch is flicked, signalling to the map-carrying placenta, that it and the baby are about to be seperated. The placenta then ejects its seeds of instructions- how to follow the map- by pumping for about 10 minutes through the umbilical cord to the baby. It is important , not only to your baby’s journey but to life itself, that the beginning of all Miwi’s journeys are not interfered with.

There is a great need to have a nominated person there, usually the grandmother, who has been instructed to ensure that no medical personnel cut the cord until it has stopped pumping and is completely still. Only then has the placenta finished pumping the seeds of instruction; this is the Miwi essence. If the cord is cut while still pumping then the cord and not the baby will have the miwi essence instructions.

If done when it’s pumping it is like spiritually blinding our babies.”

She also explains that if this occurs, it is necessary to do a rebirthing ceremony for the baby.
